When hubby first tried this ions ago, he didn't like it one bit. I guess it's weird to eat sweet meat. Meat is usually savoury. A few years on, and having acquired somewhat of a Singaporean palate, he enjoyed them. A highly sinful treat which is offered during CNY in most homes during this period, I never buy them, as I think it's really silly to pay an arm and a leg for them. These were given by dad. He got them, in actual fact, for princess who loves anything sweet. (heavy sigh).
The bak kwa of choice is from a little shop in East Coast Road, not one of those famous brand names with queues snaking a few metres long. Our family enjoys this as it's not particularly oily, and also contains not much fat. So it's real compact meat all within one bite. Some might not like it as they prefer the fatty ones, or burnt ones, but this satisfies my tastebuds. Right amount of sweetness and perfect texture, not too hard. It's all a matter of individual taste when it comes to bak kwa, and also pineapple tarts, I guess.
It is located a few doors away from the famous Beach Road Prawn Noodles shop.

hahah...ya, was wondering why people mostly take this during cny period only? i've got a box of "raw" ones in the freezer courtesy of mum, so i just pan-fry how much i want to eat with bread..
bak kwa, yok kone, long yoke.... I love them! I must eat them moderately as I also get soar throat after having them!
daphne - Wah, here also ex. 1Kg $50 at some places. But they average around $40.
beau lotus - Wah, clever girl ah, you didn't have to pay inflated prices! So sweet of mum. Must queue some more so early? Goodness. Hehe, ya, you are right, can eat his share. What about the kids? They like? A prosperous, and happy New Year to you. Hope you had a great dinner.
jadepearl - Yes, steamboats are easy and healthy, no need to worry about what to cook and slave over the stove, considering there's probably lots of cooking going on in the few days leading to CNY.
hkchoo - Ya, it symbolises something, although I'm not good with Chinese stuff so I can't say. :P Wow, I never heard of them selling raw ones, but that is handy.
big boys oven - Oh yes, it is very heaty, and so is every yummy thing at CNY. :)
Gong Xi Fatt Chai to you and your family!
