Deep fried carrot cake sticks

What gorgeous fingers, but oh so unhealthy. I got these right off the wok this morning, before the hawker had time to even pack them up in bags. They were freshly fried and were still piping hot when I got home. A guilty indulgence for once in a blue moon is fine. :) Just look at all the artery-clogging oil on them. One must not think too much when enjoying once in a while unhealthy food. :P

Seaweed Chicken

For HK -

This is the seaweed chicken which my girl absolutely loves but I try to give her as little as possible. It's not that unhealthy the way I cook it, which is to bake them in the oven, but really, what I dislike is the fat within. I don't remember them being so fatty when it was first in the market. It tastes quite horrible sometimes, as I do not like the idea of chewing on all that fat.

Goodies from Penang

Dad told me at the very last minute, the night before he left in fact, that he was leaving for Penang. Argh!! He should have told me earlier... I could have tompang him to do me a favour. Well, anyway, before he got off the line, I told him to get me some tau sar piah. :) This will have to do, even though I was looking forward to the super fresh ones which come in a box. Beggars can't be choosers. He also got a box of preserved lime. Yum! I have not seen these in years, and it brings me back to my childhood when we used to go up to Petaling Jaya during the school holidays. I remember we even drove up to Cameron Highlands and I so hated those rides when I would feel so sick and he often had to stop by the roadside I also remember those trips to other parts of Malaysia to visit relatives, or have fun at the Kota Tinggi waterfall. Wow, that was indeed a lonnnnggg time ago. Memories...

Oops... more carrot cake

After my dinner of Fried Carrot Cake, I was presented with a different style of carrot cake this morning. Thanks to D's mum, who so kindly thought of me and got me these for breakfast. It's 11plus and we have yet to have breakfast. It's highly unusual to wake up late, it was 9plus for me, but I intended to get more rest with little one away. I mean, how often do I get to sleep in? My 'alarm clock' wakes me around 7plus every weekend. The house feels so quiet without her and no tv sounds, and lucky hubby gets to sleep in with no one to disturb him. ;)

I wish I could have slept in more, but D's hubby kindly thought of princess and bought her an outfit from Beijing and was delivering it to me. He leaves tonight to go back to the US and what a pity he doesn't get to catch the race 'live' today.

Wet, wet, wet

Another wet day greeted us today. It's been raining non-stop 24/7. Yesterday, incidentally, had the heaviest rainfall so far this month. I personally too, feel that yesterday's rain was the worst. However we braved the lashings today and ventured out to the supermarket. I've been wanting to bake some stuff but didn't have the right sugar at home. Just have been trying to hibernate as usual. I love rain, don't get me wrong. But it's just super boring not being able to go out.

Bought some chicken wings from the wet market this morning and decided to cook a dark sauce chicken with some organic (so they say) dried shittake mushrooms I had gotten a week back. Somehow, my sauce didn't turn out as thick as the one dad does. I think it's the dark sauce used.

I also spied some preserved/century eggs in the market this morning, together with some salted ducks' eggs, and picked those up. Decided to steam them. Unfortunately I wasn't too pleased with the result. It was edible, but I am bad at steaming things other than fish. Eggs are the worst. So pardon me if the steamed eggs look kind of awful. Oops, then again the picture is too small for you to see it clearly. Hehe.

In-between cooking dinner, I fried some jemput jemput, using some bananas from the big bunch that hubs insisted on getting during the weekend, and have so far only had one. I did stop him from buying the big lot but well, I didn't win that time. Now I can say, 'I told you so'. Thanks HK for the recipe so many moons back, but it didn't work for me. I don't blame the recipe. It's the fault of the cook. I don't know what went wrong but it was kind of tough.

Some food I made

Made fried wantons last night & an omelette with fish paste and spring onions. I love this omelette. It was something I discovered when we went to one of Princess' friend's house for a playdate and this was one of the dishes served. Not sure if I have blogged about it before, though. I mean, I'm not surprised as my dishes are always very predictable and same old, same old. So the truth is out. I'm a very boring cook who serves the same kind of food week in week out. Hehe. However, this fried wanton is not something I dish out very often. It does seem that I have been deep frying too much foodstuff! It's time to s-t-o-p! For the fish paste, you can buy it at the yong tau fu stall and beat it in with the egg. There is no need for salt, maybe just some white pepper. I added in the spring onions to give it a bit more flavour.

With the same minced meat, I added prawns, minus the water chestnuts and set aside some to make siew mai today. Unfortunately, they were edible but not presentable. They sort of fell apart when I was trying to take them out after steaming, so failure there. I wonder how little corner of mine makes it look so easy and beautiful. ;)

Made these crepes today just to have, not for tea or anything but just to fatten ourselves up, not that we are not fat enough. It's not funny how little princess' belly sticks out in ballet class and just 3 weeks' ago, the teacher had just commented that she had lost some weight. Must start watching what she eats now. Hehe. Maybe too much home cooking. ;)

The chocolate is way too messy and not artistically presented. But we're not complaining once it is yummy. :P
